Dark by 6:10 p.m.

Sunset on Halloween is at 5:42 p.m. in La Porte, and it’s dark by about 6:10 p.m. So most of the usual 5-to-7 hours are after dark.

  • Light it up: a flashlight or glow stick, and reflective tape on dark costumes and treat bags.
  • Stay together: go in groups, with an adult for younger kids, as Michigan City police remind families.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods during trick-or-treat hours, and watch for kids crossing between parked cars.
  • Porch light: on if you’re handing out treats.

Dress for the weather

  • Rain: rain gear that fits over costumes, and masks that don’t block side vision on wet, dark streets.
  • Cold: Halloween evenings here are often chilly, and wind makes it feel colder. Layers under costumes keep kids out longer.
  • Thunder: when thunder roars, go indoors, and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before heading back out.

One time zone, and the clocks change that night

All of La Porte County is on Central Time, and so are the hours on this page. Next door, New Carlisle and South Bend (St. Joseph County) and New Buffalo (Berrien County, Michigan) are on Eastern Time, an hour ahead, so their posted hours are Eastern. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, right after Halloween night: clocks go back an hour.
