Our guidance for what's active now
These are La Porte Weather Now's plain-language tips, drawn from NWS safety pages. They are not official warnings. Always follow the instructions in the alert above and from local officials.
Hear the latest, read out loud
No radio? Press play to hear the official alerts, the La Porte airport reading, the forecast and today’s Daily Scoop in a natural voice. Handy when your hands are full.
Read along
The La Porte County broadcast is read by an AI voice (Kokoro, open source) from official National Weather Service information, and recorded again whenever it changes, up to every 15 minutes. Other towns, and any alert newer than the recording, are read by your device’s own voice. The radio only plays while this page is open, so keep your phone’s emergency alerts on. A NOAA Weather Radio is best of all.

Report what you see
If it's safe, tell the National Weather Service about hail, damage, flooding, or a tornado. Reports help forecasters warn the people in the storm's path. How to send a storm report to NWS ↗ (online form, social media, email, or the mPING app). If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911 first.
Stay safe, document the damage, and watch for scams
- Stay far away from downed power lines and anything touching them. Call 911, then NIPSCO at 1-800-464-7726.
- Smell gas? Leave right away and call from outside.
- Run generators outside only, at least 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. Never in a garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide can kill in minutes.
- Power out? Keep the fridge and freezer closed. A closed fridge keeps food safe for about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 hours (24 if half full).
- Stay out of flood water. It can hide debris, downed lines and sewage.
- Take photos and video of all the damage before you clean up or make repairs.
- Call your insurance company as soon as you can, and write down who you talked to and when.
- Make only the repairs needed to prevent more damage (a tarp on the roof, boards over a window) and keep the receipts.
- Need shelter, food or help paying for repairs? Call 211.
Storm-chaser scams: what Indiana's Attorney General warns about
After big storms, out-of-town crews knock on doors. Be skeptical if someone says your roof needs work right away, says they're "doing work down the street," offers a deal for today only, or pressures you to sign.
- Indiana law requires a written contract for home improvement work over $150, with the price, payment schedule, a detailed description of the work, start and finish dates, and the contractor's name, address and signature.
- Never pay for the whole job up front. The Attorney General advises a down payment of no more than one-third.
- Contractors can't offer to pay or waive your insurance deductible, and they can't act as your public adjuster.
- Get written bids, choose a local, established contractor, and check that they're licensed, bonded and insured with your city or county building department.
- Report a scam: Indiana Attorney General Consumer Protection Division, 1-800-382-5516 or file a complaint online.

Listening is legal in most places, and laws differ by state. In Indiana, it’s a misdemeanor to have a scanner or radio that can pick up police channels anywhere but your home or business, unless you have an exemption such as a ham radio license. It’s also a misdemeanor to use any scanner or scanner app during a crime or to avoid police (Indiana Code 35-44.1-2-7).
