La Porte is on Central Time.
La Porte County is in the Central Time Zone, the same as Chicago. South Bend and St. Joseph County, the next county east, are on Eastern Time, an hour ahead. If you're coming from Michigan or South Bend, you gain an hour on the way here.

Driving in
- Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90): take exit 49 to State Road 39 south into La Porte.
- From I-94 or Michigan City: follow US 35 south into town.
- From Valparaiso: State Road 2 east comes straight in.

By train
The South Shore Line
The South Shore Line runs between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and South Bend, with stops in Michigan City, about 12 miles from La Porte. Michigan City's new 11th Street Station opened in June 2025 with a 542-space parking garage. From there, plan on a ride or a rental car into town.
Amtrak no longer stops in Michigan City (service ended April 4, 2022). The nearest Amtrak stop is New Buffalo, Michigan, on the line between Chicago and Detroit.

Flying in
South Bend International (SBN) is the closest airport with airline service, 28 miles by road. Chicago Midway (MDW) is 69 miles and O'Hare (ORD) 92 miles. Private planes can use La Porte Municipal Airport (PPO), which is also where our current conditions come from.
