La Porte County, IN weather by town
The National Weather Service forecast and alerts for every town in La Porte County, on Central Time, with what lake-effect snow, storms and wind mean in each one. For La Porte itself, see the home page.
One county, three kinds of weather
La Porte County runs from the Lake Michigan shoreline, at 581 feet its lowest point, south to the Kankakee River, which forms its southern boundary. That's why one forecast doesn't fit every town:
- The lakeshore (Michigan City, Long Beach, Trail Creek) gets lake-effect snow first, lake breezes in summer, and dangerous waves and rip currents on Lake Michigan. On Jan. 20, 2024, Trail Creek reported 36 inches of snow to La Porte's 28.
- The middle and east (La Porte, Rolling Prairie, Westville, Kingsford Heights, Union Mills) can still get heavy lake-effect bands. On Jan. 14-15, 2026, the highest total in the Weather Service's report was 20 inches, in eastern La Porte County.
- The south (Wanatah, Hanna, La Crosse) sees less lake snow, more wind across open fields, and flooding along the Kankakee River and low ground.
The whole county is on Central Time and gets its forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service office for Northern Indiana in Syracuse. See lake-effect snow in La Porte County and snow totals for more.
