Why totals vary so much across the county
Lake-effect snow falls in narrow bands, so one town can get a foot while the next gets flurries. On Jan. 20, 2024, reports compiled by ABC7 Chicago had 36 inches in Trail Creek and 28 in La Porte; on Jan. 14-15, 2026, the Weather Service's highest total was 20 inches in eastern La Porte County while a station just west of La Porte measured 3. Measure snow for the Weather Service
Many of these numbers come from volunteers. CoCoRaHS volunteers measure rain and snow every morning with a simple gauge and a ruler, and trained SKYWARN spotters report to the Weather Service during storms. Both are free to join, and La Porte County can always use more observers.

The Weather Service's Northern Indiana office, in Syracuse, puts snow reports in its local storm reports during and after a storm. The Iowa Environmental Mesonet at Iowa State University archives every one, and a free GitHub job copies La Porte County's snow reports here once an hour from October through May.
