WEEKEND WEATHER

Day by day

"Best time outside" is the longest stretch of daylight with rain chance under 20%, wind 12 mph or less and 55–88°F (or, if there isn't one, the most comfortable stretch). That's our own rule of thumb built from the NWS hourly forecast, not an official NWS product. The severe storm outlook comes from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center and appears once the day is within 3 days.

LAKE MICHIGAN

Beaches and the lake

Washington Park, Long Beach and Mt. Baldy, from the National Weather Service’s beach and marine forecasts for the La Porte County shore. Lake Michigan’s waves and currents can be deadly even on a sunny day. For the live beach cam, the lake right now, and water quality, see Lake Michigan today.

Our lake safety tips · from the Weather Service’s advice

Stay safe at the lake, in every season

  • Steer clear of the pier. Most current-related drownings on the Great Lakes happen near piers and breakwalls, and most happen when waves are 3 feet or higher. Swim at least 100 yards from piers, and stay off them when the waves are up.
  • Caught in a current? Flip, float, follow. Flip onto your back, float to keep your head above water, and follow the current or the safest path out of the water. Don’t fight it.
  • Someone in trouble? Call 911, throw them something that floats, and shout to them to flip, float and follow. Don’t go in after them without something that floats.
  • Cold water and shelf ice. The lake stays cold into June and turns cold again by fall, and a sudden plunge can take your breath away. In winter, never walk out on the shelf ice along the shore. It can break without warning.
