Michigan City is La Porte County's largest city and its window on Lake Michigan: the lakefront, the harbor, the dunes and the South Shore Line. It's about 12 miles northwest of La Porte (straight line), on Central Time, and its forecasts and warnings come from the National Weather Service office for Northern Indiana in Syracuse.

What Michigan City's weather is like
Living on the lake changes the weather. When cold air blows across the open water in late fall and winter, Lake Michigan feeds it heat and moisture, and the lakeshore is first in line for lake-effect snow. On Jan. 20, 2024, reports compiled by ABC7 Chicago had 35 inches in Michigan City and 36 in neighboring Trail Creek, against 28 in La Porte. Bands like that can bury one side of town while the other sees flurries, so check the radar, not just the forecast.
In summer the lake works the other way: a lake breeze can keep the shore cooler than La Porte on a hot afternoon, and north winds stack up waves and rip currents at Washington Park and Mount Baldy. The Weather Service's swim risk is on our Lake Michigan page every day of beach season.
Storms come off the lake fast, too. During the Aug. 10, 2020 derecho, the Weather Service logged a 56 mph gust 2 miles west-northwest of the city at 4:42 p.m. Central.
