The call for this job site

Loading the forecast…

How the call is made

  • Every work hour is checked against your trade's limits: rain chance, storms, gusts, temperature, and more.
  • An hour that crosses a stop limit isn't workable. The morning call needs a long enough workable stretch to be worth starting (4 hours for most trades). Later in the day, it covers the hours that are left.
  • A severe weather warning that covers the site, like a Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Warning, stops work while it's in effect. Most watches and advisories add a heads-up; a few stop work for the trades they matter to, like a Wind Advisory for roofers.
Why crews use it

One clear call, before anyone leaves the yard.

A weather app shows everyone the same forecast. Hard Hat Weather checks each of your job sites, hour by hour, against the limits your trade actually works to.

No more 4:45 AM guessing

GO, DELAY, or STOP, the hours that work, and the reason, in one message for every site. Decide once, before the trucks are loaded.

Your limits, not an app's

Roofers stop at 25 mph gusts. Painters need 4 dry hours after the last coat. Pours can't take rain. Every call uses your trade's limits, and you can change any of them.

Warnings for your sites only

When the National Weather Service issues a warning that covers one of your job sites, you get an email right away. No county-wide noise.

How it works

What a workday looks like.

You tell us your job sites, when crews start, and what weather stops your work. We handle the rest, every workday.

  1. 5:00 AM

    Your crews get the call

We check the Weather Service's hour-by-hour forecast for each job site against your limits, then send GO, DELAY, or STOP, with the workable hours and the reason. On a STOP, it names the next good day. On a DELAY or STOP, your email includes a friendly note you can forward to the homeowner.

  2. During the day

    Heads-ups and warnings

We recheck every job site every 30 minutes. If rain or storms move in sooner, or a delay clears early, your crew leaders get a heads-up. Weather Service warnings come right away.

  3. Sunday evening

    The week ahead

The call for every workday of the coming week, for every job site, so you can plan the schedule and the materials.

  4. After work

    Your weather record

On a day the weather stopped you, a dated record that evening: our call, what the nearest weather station measured, and a notice you can forward to the owner or general contractor. Every month, the full log, and the month's rain and freezing days next to NOAA's 30-year normal. Ready for a delay claim.

The messages

Short, specific, and easy to forward.

Plain words with the job site, the call, the hours, and the reason. They come by text to anyone who agrees, or by email. Here's how they read.

Severe weather warnings that cover a job site, like a Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, Flash Flood, or Winter Storm Warning, stop work while they're in effect. Most watches and advisories, like a Tornado Watch or Heat Advisory, add a heads-up to the text; a Wind Advisory stops roofing, lift, tent, and inflatable work.

Accountable

We keep score. In public.

  • Every Daily Scoop forecast from La Porte Weather Now is checked against the La Porte airport's weather station, hits and misses alike, on our public Track Record.
  • Your monthly weather log does the same for every call we send you: each call next to what the weather station nearest your job site recorded. Your Sunday email adds the score: how many GO days stayed dry, and how often the weather showed up on STOP days.
  • When we're wrong, we say so. Corrections are dated and never quietly edited away.
  • A real local business: La Porte Weather Now LLC, registered in Indiana and based in La Porte, run by Scoop, who has completed the National Weather Service's SKYWARN storm spotter training. Questions go to a person, not a call center.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Who makes the final call?

You do. Hard Hat Weather is guidance built from Weather Service forecasts and the limits you set. Forecasts can be wrong, so your crew leaders always have the final say on site, and official warnings come first.

How is this different from a weather app?

A weather app shows the same forecast to everyone. We check each of your job sites hour by hour against your trade's limits, then send one clear call with the hours that work, before your crews leave.

When does it start?

The next workday after you sign up. Your calls come by text if you agree to texts, by email if you don't. Your 7-day trial starts with your first call, not the day you sign up.

Where does it work?

Anywhere the National Weather Service forecasts in the United States. We're based in La Porte County, Indiana, and we're enrolling our first crews in Northwest Indiana now.

What time do the calls come?

By 5:00 AM local time: about 90 minutes before your crews start, but never before 4:30 AM. Want a different time? Reply to any of our emails.

Who gets the calls?

You, and anyone else you choose, like your foremen or your office. To add someone by email, reply with their email address and we'll add them. To add a phone, use your welcome email's short join code: each person texts JOIN and that code to our Hard Hat Weather number from their own phone. Anyone can reply STOP at any time.

Can I change the limits?

Yes. Every limit, from the rain chance to the wind gusts, can be set per job site. If your shingles are rated for colder weather, or your lift for more wind, reply to any of our emails with your numbers and the calls follow them.

What's free, and what do the plans add?

Your first 7 days include everything. After that, the Free plan keeps one job site's morning call and Weather Service warnings coming by email, for $0, for as long as you want. Crew ($19 a month) adds up to 5 people, up to 5 job sites, heads-ups when the call changes during the day, the week ahead every Sunday, same-day weather records on delay days, and a monthly weather log. Company ($39 a month) covers every job site and phone you have.

How does the rain-out guarantee work?

If our morning call for a job site says GO, and the nearest National Weather Service reporting station records rain or snow there for 2 or more of your work hours, without a heads-up from us first, we take a week off your next bill. It's checked automatically each night in your weather log, so you don't have to ask. It applies to Crew and Company plans, up to one month's price in any month.

What's in the weather log?

For each workday and job site: the call we sent, and what the nearest National Weather Service reporting station recorded, including the day's rain, the work hours with rain or snow, thunder, and the strongest wind and gusts. It comes by email on the 1st with a spreadsheet you can keep for your records or attach to a delay claim. On the 8th, a second email puts the month next to the 30-year normal at the nearest NOAA station: how many days had 0.10 inch or more of rain or melted snow, stayed at freezing or colder, or brought an inch of snow, against the normal for that month. Many contracts, like the AIA A201, grant weather time only when the weather was abnormal for the period, and that's the data they ask for.

What's the same-day weather record?

On a day our call kept your crew away (STOP or DELAY), or a GO day that got rained on anyway, you get an email that evening with the call we made and what the nearest Weather Service station measured during your work hours: rain, wet hours, wind, and temperature. Forward it to your customer or general contractor, or keep it with the job file for a delay claim. It ends with a short notice of the weather delay, written for you to forward to the owner or general contractor, since many contracts want written notice within a few days. (It's a starting point, not legal advice.)

Do you do snow removal?

Yes. Pick Snow removal when you sign up, and instead of a morning work call you get a snow & ice call around 6 PM whenever snow or ice is in the forecast: PLOW, SALT, or WATCH for each lot, with the expected snow from the National Weather Service and when it falls, plus a 3 AM update if it gets worse. Landscapers who plow in winter can have both: just ask. Quiet nights, no message.

Do you work with farms?

Yes. Field Day Weather is our farm version: calls for spraying (with the dicamba label's rules built in), hay, and field work, frost calls the evening before, heat and cold stress calls for livestock, and spray records by text.

Can my crew get the texts in Spanish?

Yes. Anyone who'd rather read their texts in Spanish texts ESPANOL to our number, and their morning calls, heads-ups, and warnings come in Spanish from then on. ENGLISH switches back. You can also pick Spanish for your own phone when you sign up. Emails stay in English.

Can I see the calls on my calendar?

Yes. Your welcome email has a private calendar link (and on Crew and Company, so does your Sunday email). Add it to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook, and each job site's call for the next 7 days shows up there, updating as the forecast changes. The morning call each workday still has the final say.

How do I add or change a job site?

Reply to any of our emails with the address. Add up to 3 job sites when you sign up, and more any time after, up to your plan’s limit.

What if you get it wrong?

We'll tell you. Your monthly weather log puts every call next to what the weather station actually recorded, misses included.

Is my information shared or sold?

No. We use your details only to run your alerts. We never sell or share phone numbers or text consent for anyone's marketing. See our privacy policy.

How do I cancel?

Tell us any time, and we'll stop your alerts and billing. There's no contract and no cancellation fee. Anyone can stop texts to their own phone by replying STOP.
