Good to know
- Deer: Indiana's legal hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset (2026–27 Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide). Waterfowl: one-half hour before sunrise to sunset (teal: sunrise to sunset). Turkey: one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Hours can differ on state-owned property. Our times are worked out for La Porte; they shift by a minute or two across the county.
- 2026–27 deer seasons: archery Oct. 1–Jan. 3, firearms Nov. 14–29, muzzleloader Dec. 5–20, and deer reduction zones (designated areas only) Sept. 15–Jan. 31.
- Pressure: many anglers and hunters swear by a falling or rising barometer. The research on fish and pressure is mixed, so treat it as one clue, not a forecast. “Steady” here means less than 0.02 inches of change in three hours; “rising” or “falling” means 0.06 or more.
- No “best feeding times.” Solunar tables aren't a Weather Service product or a measurement, so we leave them out. The moon's phase is plain astronomy.
- On the lake: the Shore Call is our morning call for small boats, made from the Weather Service's nearshore lake forecast for Michigan City to New Buffalo. A Small Craft Advisory or a Special Marine Warning always comes first; see Lake Michigan for the full forecast and alerts.
