Lightning: when thunder roars, go indoors
No place outside is safe when thunder can be heard. The National Weather Service says to get inside a building or a hard-topped car, and to wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back out. Bleachers, open fields and tall light poles are the worst places to be.
Cold nights in the stands
Fall evenings cool off fast once the sun goes down, and wind off open fields makes it feel colder. Check the 9 p.m. number on each card, dress in layers, and bring something to sit on: metal bleachers get cold.
One time zone, one note
All of La Porte County is on Central Time. Games across the line in St. Joseph County (South Bend, New Carlisle) are on Eastern Time, an hour ahead.
