Checking NIPSCO…

From NIPSCO's public outage list, which NIPSCO updates about every 10 minutes; this page checks every 5. Times are La Porte time and NIPSCO's estimates. Rural homes on an electric co-op (REMC), or in a town with its own utility, won't show here: check your bill for your company's outage line. Not listed but your power's out? Report it. NIPSCO may not know yet.

KNOW WHAT TO DO

Power's out. Now what?

  1. Check the breaker box first. If the neighbors have lights and you don't, it may be just your house.
  2. Report it to NIPSCO at 1-800-464-7726 or online, even if you think someone already has.
  3. Stay far away from downed lines and anything touching them, like a fence, puddle or car. Call 911, then NIPSCO.
  4. Keep the fridge and freezer shut. A closed fridge keeps food safe about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 (24 if half full).
  5. Generators outside only, 20+ feet from doors and windows. Never in the garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide kills.
  6. Unplug electronics and leave one light on so you know when it's back. That avoids a surge when the power returns.
  7. Cold or hot inside? Check on older neighbors. For a warming or cooling center, call 211.
