Preparing everyday people for the weather that's coming.
The climate is changing, storms are intensifying, and most people are one bad forecast away from being caught off guard. Our job is simple: turn free, reliable public weather data into guidance people can actually use — whether that's deciding when to leave for a road trip or when to take a tornado warning seriously.
La Porte is the starting point. We're building the most useful free weather site for La Porte County first, then for our neighbors, one town at a time.
Storm prep shouldn't require a meteorology degree.
Every forecast on this site comes from the National Weather Service — a free, publicly funded, and reliable source. We don't gate any of it behind a paywall or an app download. We just translate the raw data into decisions: is it safe to drive, is tonight's campsite going to be miserable, is a storm actually headed your way.
Weather first, faith-rooted, open to all.
I started La Porte Weather Now because I felt led by Jesus to serve people with the weather and help them get ready for a changing climate. I try to run it the way I try to live: serve God, serve people, tell the truth, and be prepared. Jesus tells us to keep our lanterns lit (Luke 12:35), and that's really what this site is for: helping you be ready before the storm is.
“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” — Psalm 91:2 (KJV)
None of that changes what you get here. Weather, alerts and emergency help are free for everyone, whatever you believe, and when we talk about climate we stick to what the science shows, from sources like NOAA and the National Weather Service.
Scoop, Founder & Weather Reporter.
La Porte Weather Now is run by Scoop, founder of La Porte Weather Now LLC here in La Porte. I'm not a meteorologist, and I won't pretend to be: every forecast and warning on this site comes from the National Weather Service, and my job is to explain what it means for La Porte in plain English. Everything here runs on La Porte's clock, Central Time, and comes from the Weather Service office that covers La Porte County, NWS Northern Indiana in Syracuse. I take that job seriously, so I'm working through the official weather training available to the public.
Finished:
- NWS SKYWARN Spotter Training (September 2026), the National Weather Service's online training for people who report severe weather: Role of the SKYWARN Spotter, Spotter Convective Basics, and Spotter Registration
- Weather Radar Fundamentals, how Doppler weather radar works and how to read common weather on it
- Anticipating Hazardous Weather & Community Risk, a course for spotters, first responders and local decision makers that covers the same ground as the Hazardous Weather and Flood Preparedness course from FEMA and the National Weather Service
All of it is online training on MetEd, the training site of UCAR's COMET Program, and together it covers every MetEd course NWS Northern Indiana lists for storm spotters.
In progress:
- A live SKYWARN spotter class from NWS Northern Indiana
- NWS JetStream, the Weather Service's online weather school
- CoCoRaHS, the national network of volunteer rain and snow observers
I'll mark each one here as it's finished. Learning never stops in weather, and neither will I.
Safety stays free. Our record stays public.
- Official alerts and emergency help are free, always. The Emergency view, official NWS alerts, and our safety checklists will never sit behind a paywall, a signup, or an ad. The Emergency view has no donation buttons or shop links.
- Money never shapes safety advice. Donations and any future sponsors help pay for this site. None of them get a say in what our alerts, forecasts, or safety tips say.
- We keep score in public. Every Daily Scoop forecast is checked against the La Porte airport's weather station on our Track Record page, and every correction is listed there. We never quietly edit a forecast, and anyone can check: every post and every change to one is saved, with its time, in our public post history.
- Sources on everything. Every briefing and explainer names where its facts come from and when we checked them.
Me, the van, and the dogs.
This site exists because we actually live this — here's some of it, straight from the road.
