Beach hazards today; cool with a stray shower

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for northern La Porte County through 4 a.m. Central Wednesday. NWS says visitors should stay out of Lake Michigan and off piers.

Active alert: dangerous swimming conditions

NWS Northern Indiana issued the statement at 2:38 a.m. Central Tuesday. Waves of 2–4 feet, a strong southward longshore current, structural currents near piers and breakwalls, and possible rip currents within sandbars are expected. Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water, and waves can sweep people from piers.

Today: cool, cloudy and breezy

La Porte should remain rather cloudy with temperatures in the lower to middle 60s. East-northeast winds may gust near 20 mph. A stray light shower is possible, but the better 20–30% rain chances are east of Interstate 69, leaving most of the La Porte area dry.

Wednesday and beyond

A few light showers remain possible Wednesday before a dry stretch begins Thursday. NWS expects seasonably cool conditions through the weekend, with more sunshine during the second half of the week.

Forecast uncertainty: Any showers today or Wednesday should be isolated and light, so many locations will receive no measurable rain. Lake conditions can change faster than the inland forecast; follow the live beach statement before visiting the shore.
