A new era of space travel begins with a million-mile journey
NASA’s Roman Space Telescope launched Sunday as robotic explorers, record-setting Moon crews and commercial spacecraft rapidly expand humanity’s reach beyond Earth.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — NASA’s newest flagship observatory began a three-month, roughly million-mile voyage Sunday morning, adding another major spacecraft to a year already marked by the farthest human journey in history.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off at 7:26 a.m. Eastern aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. NASA reported receiving telemetry seven minutes after launch; the telescope separated from the rocket 31 minutes into flight. Its solar panels and lower sunshade later deployed successfully.
Roman is traveling toward the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, or L2, about one million miles from Earth. That is the same broad region used by the James Webb Space Telescope, although the observatories will operate independently.
A telescope built to survey the universe at enormous speed
Roman combines infrared vision with a field of view at least 100 times wider than Hubble’s. NASA says it is designed to survey the sky about 1,000 times faster than Hubble and transmit approximately 1.4 terabytes of information daily—the highest data rate yet for a NASA astrophysics mission.
Its Wide Field Instrument will investigate dark matter, dark energy, galaxies and exoplanets. An experimental coronagraph will block the glare of distant stars to image Jupiter-like planets and test technology that could support future searches for Earth-like worlds.
The telescope now enters a three-month commissioning period. Its first public science images are expected in early 2027. That timetable is a target, not a guarantee; deployment, calibration and testing must succeed first.
Human travel has already crossed a new boundary
Roman carries no people, but its launch follows the most significant human deep-space journey in decades. In April, the four-person Artemis II crew flew around the Moon aboard Orion, becoming the first humans to travel near the Moon since Apollo 17.
NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen reached a maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth, exceeding Apollo 13’s record. They returned safely after a nearly 10-day flight that tested life support, manual spacecraft handling, navigation and re-entry systems needed for later lunar missions.
Artemis II was a test flight, not a landing. NASA says Artemis III will next test integrated operations with commercially built lunar landers in low Earth orbit before a later attempt to return astronauts to the lunar surface.
The next crewed flight is closer to home
NASA’s next announced SpaceX crew rotation, Crew-13, is scheduled no earlier than mid-September. NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov are assigned to fly aboard Dragon to the International Space Station.
The mission reflects another major change in space travel: government agencies now routinely purchase crew transportation from a commercial operator while continuing international station partnerships.
Commercial stations remain a promise under construction
Private companies are developing stations intended to succeed or supplement the International Space Station. ESA has signed an agreement with Vast concerning possible European astronaut access to the proposed Haven-1 station. Spaceflight schedules frequently change, so dates and capabilities should remain labeled as plans until hardware launches and operates successfully.
